When we add into the mix random genetic mutation and the nonrandom process of natural selection that results in certain genetic mutations becoming more prevalent, the view that animalia autonomy indicates independence and self-sufficiency becomes murky. Recent scientific studies into animal instincts point to a more contextualized view of autonomy. In Blumberg’s words:

All complex behaviors are composed of sub-behaviors, each of which is induced at each stage of development, often in nonobvious ways. Thus DNA, cells, behavior, and our physical, social, and cultural environments interact continuously and dynamically, in real time, to create the behaviors that have revealed themselves to many as the products of divine or genetic design. Evolution, of course, plays a major role in the emergence of complex behavior, not by focusing its attention on genes, but by selecting for the entire developmental manifold.21
